Key Stage Two

Developing children’s understanding of food and where it comes from is important along with growing their cooking skills.

Cooking, food and nutrition is now part of the national curriculum. The Children Food Trust recommends 24 hours Food education in this key stage with most of the time focused on practical cookery. Specifically:

  • Understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet

  • Prepare and cook a variety of predominately savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques

  • Understand seasonality and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed

The Cooking Pioneers approach – In a key stage two lesson we would look at nutrition, seasonality, food issues (eg vegetarian, gluten free, sugar free, etc) and learn how to cook recipes using a single hotplate. Here are some examples of recipes that we will be using: soups, pasta sauces, side dishes, salads, flatbreads.
