Fish Pie

Fish Pie is one of my family favourite’s. This one is topped with mash potato but my Mum sometimes topped it with cheese scones!

700g of fish and seafood. It is nice to mix it up, I like a mixture of white fish, salmon, smoked fish and prawns.

400mls Milk

25g/1oz Butter

25g/ 1oz Flour

1 Lemon

2tblsp Dill

Salt and Pepper

Topping

1kg Potatoes

50g Butter

50mls Milk

50g Breadcrumbs

50g Grated Cheese

What do we need?

  • Sharp Knife

  • Vegetable Peeler

  • Chopping Board

  • Fine Sieve

  • Frying/ Poaching Pan

  • Two Saucepans

  • Oven Dish

  • Scissors

  • Tablespoon

  • Wooden Spoon

  • Whisk

  • Potato Masher

Tia's tip

You do not need to cook the other fish as it will cook in the oven. You can use cooked or uncooked prawns

What do we do?

  • Turn the oven onto 190/200C

  • Peel the potatoes and put onto boil for 15 minutes or until cooked through

  • Place the smoked fish into the poaching pan with enough milk to cover, simmer for 5 minutes

  • Cut the remaining fish into cubes and place in the oven dish, along with the prawns (if you are using them).

  • Remove the smoked fish from the poaching pan and put to one side to cool.

  • Add 1oz butter into the other saucepan, put on the stove to melt

  • Add the flour to the butter, stir well

  • Pour the milk from the poaching pan through a sieve into the saucepan

  • Whisk well until the sauce thickens, add the remaining milk and stir well

  • Remove the sauce from the heat and add lemon juice, dill and salt and pepper to taste

  • Flake the smoked fish into the oven dish and pour the sauce over.

  • Drain the cooked potatoes and mash well using the masher

  • Add the 50g of butter and 50mls of milk to the mashed potato and stir well

  • Spoon the mashed potato mix on top of the fish and sauce, spread to cover

  • Place the fish pie in the oven and cook for 15 minutes

  • After 15 minutes remove from the oven and sprinkle with the breadcrumbs and cheese

  • Cook for a further 15 minutes or until brown on top and bubbling round the edges. The fish should be cooked through too.

Eat and enjoy!
