French Toast

French toast/ eggy bread is a delicious alternative to eggs on toast/ pancakes. One of the earliest versions of French toast has been traced back to the Roman Empire. The name “French toast" was first used in 17th-century England. It’s easy to prepare and can be topped with sweet or savoury toppings. This recipe is for a sweet version.

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs

  • 3 slices of bread (if you want it to be a super posh version you can use brioche or fruit bread)

  • ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract (or essence)

  • Butter for cooking

  • For toppings (you can have any fruit and any type of syrup/honey – a dollop of natural yogurt is good too)

  • Strawberries

  • Bananas

  • Honey

What do we need?

  • Sharp Knife

  • Chopping board

  • Pancake pan or frying pan

  • Mixing Bowls

  • Fork

  • Spatula

What do we do?

  • Crack the eggs into two separate bowls.

  • Use your fork to mix up the egg. You need the yolk to break and be mixed in with the white of the egg

  • Add a little cinnamon to one bowl and mix again

  • Add the vanilla to the other bowl and mix again

  • Cut each slice of bread into four quarters

  • Put your frying/ pancake pan on the stove on a medium heat

  • Take one piece of bread to the bowl with cinnamon egg. You need to make sure the egg covers both sides.

  • Add a little butter to the frying pan and add the piece of egg covered bread – you can cook up to two at a time

  • You need to cook the bread for 1 minute on each side (As the frying pan gets hotter it will cook quicker)

  • Once it is done move the cooked French toast to a plate

  • Repeat steps 6 – 10 for all of the pieces of bread in the cinnamon egg and then repeat the steps for the rest of the bread into the vanilla egg

  • Wash and remove the green top from the strawberries and slice them thinly

  • Peel the banana and slice thinly

  • Take a slice of cooked French toast and add your toppings of choice, drizzle with honey and eat

Tia's tip

Be careful - don't let the bread sit in the egg mixture for too long.
