Meatballs

My children love meatballs as an alternative to Bolognese and they love to get involved in making them. I have used pork mince in this recipe but you can use beef or turkey or a combination of two different mince.

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 500g Mince (we used Pork)

  • 50g Breadcrumbs

  • 15g Parmesan cheese, grated

  • 1 tsp Salt and Pepper

  • 1 Egg

Sauce

  • 1 Onion

  • 1 packet of Passata

  • 1 tsp Oregano

  • 1 tsp Salt and Pepper

  • 1 tsp Garlic Paste

  • 1 Tbsp Sunflower Oil

  • 1 medium sized Carrot, grated

  • 6-8 Mushrooms, sliced (Optional)

What do we need?

  • Chopping Board

  • Sharp knife

  • Medium sized mixing bowl

  • Weighing Scales

  • Grater

  • Teaspoon

  • Fork

  • Large saucepan

  • Wooden Spoon or Spatula for stirring

Tia's tip

Before adding the extra water put the ¼ cup into the passata bottle to clean it and give you tomato water

What do we do?

Method – Preparation of Meatballs

  • Place the mince in the medium sized mixing bowl

  • Add the breadcrumbs, parmesan and salt and pepper into the bowl

  • Crack the egg and then add to the bowl and mix together with the fork until combined

  • Using both hands, take a small amount of mince, roll into a ball (roughly the size of a small golf ball) until all of the mince has been used up

  • Put the meatballs in the fridge for half an hour to chill

Method – Sauce

  • Chop the onion into small cubes. The easiest way is to put half an onion flat side down on the chopping board. Cut from the root outwards (do not cut through the root) then cut across the onion the other way. Or you can use a grater (but be careful of your eyes – it will make you cry).

  • Put the onion in the saucepan with oil and garlic paste and cook for 1-2 minutes until softened

  • When ready add the passata, oregano and grated carrot stirring well and bring up to simmer (little bubbles)

  • When the sauce is simmering, add the meatballs individually (ask an adult to help you as the liquid is hot)

  • Put a lid on the saucepan and continue to simmer on a medium heat for 10 minutes

  • Add the mushrooms and stir well

  • If you need more sauce, add ¼ cup of water, cover with the lid and simmer for another 10 minutes

  • When the meatballs are cooked, season with salt and pepper

  • Serve with cooked pasta of your choice

Eat and enjoy!
