White Sauce

Learning how to make a basic white sauce will help with lots of different dishes. You could add cheese to the white sauce to make macaroni cheese, or use it with some seasoning for lasagne. Alternately if you switch the milk for chicken/beef or vegetable stock you can use the sauce to make a pie filling.

Tia's tip

Using a whisk to stir instead of wooden spoon is easier as it stops it being lumpy!

Ingredients

  • 1oz (25g) flour

  • 1oz (25g) butter

  • 1/2 pint of milk

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp pepper

What do we need?

  • Hob

  • Saucepan

  • Teaspoon

  • Measuring jug

  • Whisk or spoon (not metal)

What do we do?

  • Turn the hob onto a medium heat

  • Place your saucepan on the hob

  • Add the butter to the saucepan and let it melt

  • Once melted add the flour and stir – It will turn into a paste (posh chefs call this a roux)

  • Stir the paste a little then slowly add some milk

  • Each time you add milk you need to stir it a lot to get it mixed with the paste

  • Keep adding the milk until you have a nice smooth sauce and then add a little salt and pepper if you like it

If you want to make cheese sauce add 2oz of grated mature cheddar cheese at the end of the steps above and stir slowly while on the heat until it is melted.
